The young adult period has such rapid physiological, cognitive and emotional changes. These changes, when combined with the pressure that comes from school and work, can often cripple young adults and drag them down into a depressed state.

A 1995 study by psychologist Jeffrey Jensen Arnett highlights this struggle many young adults face today.  When 300 young adults all over the world between the ages of 18 and 29 were asked what emotions they experienced on the threshold of adulthood, the resounding result was “a desire to achieve independence while still remaining closely linked to one’s family, in order to obtain support when necessary.” It is not hard to see the oxymoron in that statement. It’s no wonder the young adults of today are stressed.  Maintaining a connection to one’s family while proving independence seems almost a contradiction and are two very different goals to balance.  Young adults are taking longer to transition from young adult to independent adult than before, getting married later–the societal and social norms are becoming more fluid and no longer have a specific script for success.  This can lend stress to the young adult as they try to navigate what to do with their lives.

Furthermore, a depressed young adult is likely to struggle with daily stressors and may feel helpless.  Even the most mundane or routine activities like getting up in the morning, bathing and dressing can seem insurmountable. This is likely due to the fact that the emotions associated with depression, such as anger, shame or fear, can have a psychosomatic effect on the body and manifest themselves in aches, pains, nausea or other problems that do not have a direct medical explanation.

These ailments, accompanied with the feeling of hopelessness can make everyday tasks difficult.  Young adults facing these physical and mental symptoms can find it hard to face school, social and extracurricular activities, work, and everyday functioning.
