EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a growing trend in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma that is now being offered as part of the treatment program at Pure Life Adventure. EMDR was recently recommended by the World Health Organization as a therapy for children, adolescents, and adults with PTSD because the technique “helps people reduce vivid, unwanted, repeated recollections of traumatic events.”

Pure Life Adventures staff includes Clinical Director, Mara Mueller, MSW, LCSW, CADC I, an EMDR Trained therapist. EMDR training includes completing the EMDR training course and receiving at least 10 consultation hours that include the use of EMDR therapy.

Within Pure LIfe’s adventure therapy program, having the ability to utilize Mueller’s expertise allows them to treat trauma and the effects trauma has on both psychological and biomedical pathology.  While research continues on this fairly new method of therapy, current studies show EMDR to be an “efficient approach to address psychological and physiological symptoms stemming from adverse life experiences.” Due to the positive results being seen from EMDR, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) has also recommended this therapy method specifically for those suffering from PTSD.

A holistic approach to therapy has been Pure Life’s chosen method from its beginning. Utilizing EMDR techniques for its students is a perfect example of the non-traditional, but incredibly effective therapy methods Pure Life is successfully using to help those suffering from trauma, anxiety, and depression.
Pure Life Adventure uses researched-based techniques with integrated therapeutic models throughout its adventure therapy program. Pure Life’s adventure therapy program, based in Costa Rica, works with struggling young adults to build self-efficacy, teach healthy coping strategies, behavioral and emotional regulation, leadership skills, and life skills that will allow participants to become independent, productive, and successful adults.
